Located in the Gothic Quarter, surrounded of renaissance houses, the Square hosts the Sant Felip Neri Church, which was constructed by the architect Pere Bertran according to the baroque style of the 18th century, with a fountain at the center of the square.
The square was constructed on top of the medieval cementary of Montjuïc del Bisbe, destroied during the Civil War.
You can still see the holes on the wall of the church, due to the first Spanish Civil War’s bomb. This was the first bomb launched against civilians from a plane instructed by the national party during the spanish Civil War on the 30th of January 1938.
Due to the attack, 42 people died, 20 of which were children who were taking refuge in the Church. Many other bombardments took place after that bomb, detonating indiscriminatedly on the civilian population, until the attacks that followed brought the city to surrender falling on its knees.
If you stand in this square, you can literally smell the melancholic air making it impossible to feel indiferent.
As a curious fact, here’s the video of Evanescence “My Immortal”, which was recorded in Barcelona and specially in commemoration of that attack in Sant Felip Neri’s square centuries ago, which is also shown on the video with children playing in it, being a great representation of the melancholic charm of this unique square with such great personality.
Maria and Sergi gave my husband and myself the most memorable tour of Barcelona. In just a couple of hours we felt that we had a sense of the history of the Gothic Quarter. EasyFlatBarcelona made our stay so enjoyable and we continue to absorb our trip weeks later! Thank you Maria and Sergi!!
Thank you Chris and Kirk for staying with us, you were our first tour experience and we enjoyed it as a great deal. We will of course keep on offering tours to future guests and will prepare different routes and themes.
